Do the lasting effects of acne go more than skin deep?

As a teenager you are faced with many problems. With the worries and cares of adulthood in the future, the teen is not exactly a happy and relaxed person. While looking for their own road through life a teen may feel insecure and misunderstood. If that is not enough, teenagers are faced with other problems, such as acne. This unsightly condition is the cause of woe for many teenagers because of the effects it has psychologically.

As a teenager it doesn’t take a lot to harbor a negative self image. Most are at least somewhat insecure about their outward appearance. In extreme cases, the negative self image turns into self hatred and the unsightly acne condition is seen as a cruel instrument of self punishment for failing to meet some standard.

Its only natural for teenagers to attach more importance to the praise or criticism coming from their friends or school mates, knowing that parents love you anyway and are somewhat biased toward you. You only know to well that teens can be very cruel to each other; the criticism of school mates is frequently unkind and meant to hurt. This in turn increases the feelings of anxiety, insecurity and self hatred. This causes one to withdraw from a social environment into your own private world of pain and shame.

The outward appearance and criticism are a serious state of mind for a teenagers. Not yet at the age where human beings come to terms with themselves and are no longer much interested in what others say or think. To hid one’s body or face and feel ashamed because somebody said that this is the thing to do is a mistake. Teenagers should be helped to see that acne can be defeated with persistence and by using the right products. In what ever manner, the psychological effects of acne must also be fought, or else they may never go away. For example the teenager who hated himself for having pimples on his face will turn into an adult who hates himself for being a little overweight or not making as much money as some co-worker.

The feeling of shame and discomfort with oneself does not always go away over time. It may find a new problem to act as its power source. This is the lasting effect of acne: a lack of confidence, a poor self image and a feeling of being at a disadvantage when comparing oneself to other people. This can ruin anybody’s social life and quite often they also get in the way of professional development. Unfortunately, acne is not just skin deep.
